Jamie and Jilea Hemmings founded the world's first black-owned fully autonomous grocery store, Nourish & Blue Market, after relocating to Atlanta, Georgia. Customers do not need cash to shop at this self-contained grocery store; all they need is the store's app, which can be downloaded to their mobile device. According to Atlanta's CW69 News, the couple intends to open locations throughout the United States.

Did You Know?

This black woman’s cells were used to help create the polio vaccine, and is still being used to this day In medical breakthroughs all over the world. Her miracle cells are named in her honor, and are called the Hela cells. Here is more of what Wikipedia said about,

Henrietta Lacks (born Loretta Pleasant; August 1, 1920 – October 4, 1951) was an African-American woman whose cancer cells are the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized human cell line and one of the most important cell lines in medical research. An immortalized cell line reproduces indefinitely under specific conditions, and the HeLa cell line continues to be a source of invaluable medical data to the present day.

info George Otto Gey, the first researcher to study Lacks's cancerous cells, observed that these cells were unusual in that they reproduced at a very high rate and could be kept alive long enough to allow more in-depth examination. Until then, cells cultured for laboratory studies survived for only a few days at most, which was not long enough to perform a variety of different tests on the same sample. Lacks's cells were the first to be observed that could be divided multiple times without dying, which is why they became known as "immortal". After Lacks's death, Gey had Mary Kubicek, his lab assistant, take further HeLa samples while Henrietta's body was at Johns Hopkins' autopsy facility. The roller-tube technique was the method used to culture the cells obtained from the samples that Kubicek collected. Gey was able to start a cell line from Lacks's sample by isolating one specific cell and repeatedly dividing it, meaning that the same cell could then be used for conducting many experiments. They became known as HeLa cells, because Gey's standard method for labeling samples was to use the first two letters of the patient's first and last names.

The ability to rapidly reproduce HeLa cells in a laboratory setting has led to many important breakthroughs in biomedical research. For example, by 1954, Jonas Salk was using HeLa cells in his research to develop the polio vaccine. To test his new vaccine, the cells were mass-produced in the first-ever cell production factory.Additionally, Chester M. Southam, a leading virologist, injected HeLa cells into cancer patients, prison inmates, and healthy individuals in order to observe whether cancer could be transmitted as well as to examine if one could become immune to cancer by developing an acquired immune response.

HeLa cells were in high demand and put into mass production. They were mailed to scientists around the globe for "research into cancer, AIDS, the effects of radiation and toxic substances, gene mapping, and countless other scientific pursuits". HeLa cells were the first human cells successfully cloned in 1955, and have since been used to test human sensitivity to tape, glue, cosmetics, and many other products. There are almost 11,000 patents involving HeLa cells. You can continue to read more info about this incredible women Ms Henrietta Lacks, right where we found it. Just click on this link.

The Lead Story

This amazing black woman Help to develop the moderna vaccine. We found her story in Wikipedia as is written below. Her accomplishments have saved millions around the world and will save millions more.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Corbett started working on a vaccine to protect people from coronavirus disease. Recognizing that the virus was similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, Corbett's team utilized previous knowledge of optimal coronavirus S proteins to tackle the novel coronavirus. S proteins form a “crown” on the surface of coronaviruses and are crucial for engagement of host cell receptors and the initiation of membrane fusion in coronavirus disease. This makes them a particularly vulnerable target for coronavirus prophylactics and therapeutics. Based on her previous research, Corbett's team, in collaboration with Jason McLellan and other investigators at The University of Texas at Austin,[23] transplanted stabilizing mutations from SARS-CoV S protein into SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.[19] She was part of the NIH team who helped solve the cryogenic electron microscopy (CryoEM) structure of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.[24] Her prior research suggested that messenger RNA (mRNA) encoding S protein could be used to excite the immune response to produce protective antibodies against coronavirus disease 2019.

To manufacture and test the COVID-19 vaccine Corbett's team partnered with Moderna, a biotechnology company, to rapidly enter animal studies. Subsequently, the vaccine entered Phase 1 clinical trial only 66 days after the virus sequence was released. The trial, to be completed in at least 45 people, is a dose escalation study in the form of two injections separated by 28 days. In December 2020, the Institute's Director, Anthony Fauci said: "Kizzy is an African American scientist who is right at the forefront of the development of the vaccine." In the Time's profile, Fauci wrote that Corbett has "been central to the development of the Moderna mRNA vaccine and the Eli Lilly therapeutic monoclonal antibody that were first to enter clinical trials in the U.S." and that "her work will have a substantial impact on ending the worst respiratory-disease pandemic in more than 100 years."[10] Corbett's work afforded her the opportunity to be a part of the National Institutes of Health team that had Donald Trump at the Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research Center in March 2020. When asked about her involvement with the development of the COVID-19 vaccine, Corbett said, "To be living in this moment where I have the opportunity to work on something that has imminent global importance…it's just a surreal moment for me". Corbett stated she cried when the efficacy results showed the mRNA-1273 Moderna vaccine worked.

If it makes sense it is

The American Dream (Part 1.)

‍        Throughout my life I have heard that every American can achieve the American dream if they work hard. Certainly this is true for a lot of Americans, but the real question is whether all Americans can have the American dream simultaneously. Think about it this way: Imagine that every adult in America had a four-year college degree; and with that degree in hand they found good well-paying jobs. Now with every adult in our country living what is most often described as the American dream, what happens when after working hard all year, it’s now time to go on vacation? Who is going to serve them? I understand that the concept of being someone’s servant may seem negative to some, but the fact of the matter is that this is how our society is structured. Some may feel this is a bad thing, but I say it’s in the nature of things. We’ll talk more about that next time. Returning to our American vacationers: the question is whether they will serve themselves? After Mr. and Mrs. America arrive in Hawaii for their long-awaited vacation, they will require a taxi to their hotel and assistance with their luggage once they arrive. Rooms would have to be prepared for them, which would entail prior cleaning, They're on vacation, aren't they?

Therefore, who will prepare their breakfast, lunch and dinner? If these services are required to ensure that these deserving vacationing Americans have a wonderful vacation, the question is whether these workers require a college degree to work as a taxi driver, a maid, or a doorman? The answer is or course not. And even if they did, would they be willing to provide these vital services with a four-year degree? Would you be willing to carry someone's luggage and clean their room if you held a four-year college degree? Having said that, assuming everything I've said thus far makes sense, what does this imply? Our society cannot exist without service workers, a.k.a. SERVANTS, as they are required to maintain the wealth that capitalism provides. As a result, America was not designed to ensure that every child graduates with a four-year collage degree. However, may I suggest that what we require in part is what has been occurring for more than a century in low-income and illiterate schools across America. Namely, high rates of high school dropouts, all of whom are forced to work in these low-wage, and yes, some of them are dirty service jobs that none of us wants to do. That said, based on these facts,  there is no doubt that these service jobs are essential, but can small business pay these worker a livable wage and provide health care all at the same time? In most cases probably not. Some say government shouldn’t step in, but if not the government and not the employer, then who? Surely not charitable organizations.  This issue is mush to enormous and far beyond their capability to solve.  Not to mentioned on top of everything else, affordable housing. After all we are talking about tans of millions of people.

‍

Certain problems in my opinion are so large that they can only be solved through government action. The emphasis should not be on blaming the poor for their poverty or accusing them of being lazy, as neither has any productive value. Aren't we being obtuse when it's undeniable that we NEED THE POOR? Therefore, it is unethical not to pay these hardworking Americans a living wage and to provide adequate health care. This is something we do for the horses that pull our carriages as well as the animals in our zoos. Not to mention all of the aquariums in our cities that provide jobs and tax revenue. We ensure that these non-humans are fed on a daily basis, are seen by a veterinarian and have a free place to live, also known as (FREE HEALTH CARE); (AFFORDABLE HOUSING). Why do we take such good care of these animals? Because they provide a means of subsistence for many people. Don't we also rely on our human workers, who have proven to be so important during this rare pandemic? Can't we take better care of our human employees and show them how much we value their efforts? After all, in America we are the government,   if we wanted to we could do something about it. Furthermore, none of us have no control over where we are born or the family into which we are born, and this has a significant impact on our lives. Let us stop pretending that we are better than others simply because we have so called, ”made it," while ignoring those who are less fortunate. We should be thankful to these workers for providing the manual labor required to run a great country like ours. The vast majority of these individuals are hardworking Americans who provide MUCH NEEDED SERVICES to our society. Can it be said with full assurance that their contribution is any less then those who are more fortunate? Is it true whether we like it or not, without them our civilization would crumble and if we can’t see that, it’s because we don’t want to see it.  As I always say, if something makes sense, it is “The Truth.”
